Reduction

(Lecture id-1128)

TOPICS & OBJECTIVES

1010 - Oxidation States
1010 - Recognize reduction is a gain of electrons and oxidation is a loss of electrons.
1020 - Determine the oxidation number of an atom.
1030 - Associate oxidation and reduction with changes in oxidation number.
1040 - Classify a particular change within a redox reaction as either oxidation or reduction.

1020 - RedOx Equations
    1010 - Identify an oxidation-reduction reaction.
1020 - Identify the oxidizing agent and the reducing agent in a redox reaction.
    1030 - Balance redox equations.
1040 - Identify and write the half-reactions in an electrochemical cell.

1030 - Chemical Cells
1010 - Understand and apply the definitions of chemical cell, galvanic (voltaic) cell, and electrolytic cell.
    1020 - Define electric current and understand the unit of ampere (A) = 1 C / 1 sec.
1030 - Know electric potential is the force per couloumb difference between two electrodes.
    1040 - Know electric potential is measured in volts (V) = 1 J / 1 C.
1050 - Recognize current flows from the higher potential electrode (anode) to the lower potential (cathode).
1060 - Apply and interpret chemical cell notation.
